We just returned from a 12-day transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Ft. Lauderdale on board Holland America Line’s ms Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship. During our eight straight days at sea, we got to check out some of the updates to this ship earlier this year.
One of those updates was converting the SLICE pizzeria on the aft end of the Lido deck to New York Pizza. Thin crust pizzas are now made to order. You can order one of the featured pies, or build your own from the list of ingredients.
Upon placing your order, you are given a buzzer that lets you know when your order is ready. It did take about 30 minutes for our pizza to be created and baked. While waiting, you can enjoy a salad and/or a drink from the Sea View bar next door. Or, you could order while you are sunning by the “adults-only” Seaview pool.
This is the “Bronx” pizza, the most popular on board to date. It includes capicola, pepperoni, smoked ham, Italian sausage, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. We added oregano and red pepper flakes from the shakers provided. I wanted to try the Wall Street pizza with prosciutto, arugula and white sauce, but after seven straight days at sea, the ship was out of fresh arugula. There’s always next time…
While this pizza might not stand up to Da Michele pizzeria in Naples, it is a huge upgrade for Holland America Line. Thin, crispy crust, lightly covered with good ingredients.
The pizzas are individual sized, but are big enough to share, especially if you are having a salad.
New York Pizza will be featured on Holland America’s newest ship, the ms Koningsdam, debuting in April, 2016. In addition to the Nieuw Amsterdam, New York Pizza has already been added to the Rotterdam, and is scheduled to be added to the Veendam in April, 2016.
Have you tried New York Pizza on Holland America Line? Which is your favorite pizza?
