Delicious Dumplings at Din Tai Fung in Singapore

During our first visit to Singapore nearly four years ago, we were trying to cool off from the June heat in the Paragon Shopping Center along Orchard Road.

Hungry, we headed downstairs to the food court, we were quickly noticed a long line waiting for a table at one restaurant.

Upon a closer look, you could see armies of workers making dumplings among large stacks of steamer baskets.

We had to see why local Singaporeans were willing to wait for a table at this place when there were many food options around.

We loved every bite, starting with mixing our ownsauce.

In preparation for our most recent visit to Singapore, we were on a mission to find those delicious steamed pork and vegetable dumplings again.

It wasn’t that difficult. We learned that Din Tai Fung dates back 40 years to its start in Taiwan, and has been awarded a Michelin star awarded as well as ranked as one of the world’s Top Ten Best Restaurants by The New York Times for its famous signature xiao long baos (steamed pork dumplings)

There are 18 Din Tai Fung restaurants throughout Singapore, including one in the Suntec City Mall located very close to our Conrad Centennial Singapore hotel.

In Suntec City, Din Tai Fung is located on the second floor near the Starbucks and the Godiva chocolate store. As you can see through the glass windows, it’s a busy place.

Lunchtime is especially busy with a heavy business crowd. All dumplings are made as they are ordered.

At Din Tai Fung the decor is spartan. The tables each contain a condiment coaster with soy sauce, vinegar and chili paste.

You mix your dipping sauce to your personal liking, starting with fresh ginger and adding vinegar, soy sauce and chili paste.

We might have gotten a little carried away with the chili paste this time.

The steamed pork dumplings are delicious but are “juicy” with fat. The pork and vegetable dumplings are a little lighter.

Mr. Jones also loves the pork fried rice, while the Oriental Wontons with Black Vinegar & Chili Oil listed under the snack menu is one of my favorites.

Have you tried Din Tai Fung? What’s your favorite dish?
