This fall we escaped life’s chaos for a weekend and headed south to Paris, Arkansas where we discovered the beautiful Mount Magazine State Park.
Although we were headed south, we were actually headed up – to the highest point in Arkansas.
Mt. Magazine State Park sits at the highest point in Arkansas at 2,753 feet and represents the highest point between the Rockies and the Appalachians. A park trail provides access to the state’s high point where visitors can take photos and sign the guest book.
The mountain gets its name from French explorers who experienced a landslide on the mountain. The noise was so great that one explorer described it as the sound of an ammunition magazine exploding. The explorers then named the mountain “Magazine”.
Park roads lead to expansive views of Blue Mountain Lake and the Ouachita Mountains to the south and of the Arkansas River Valley and the Ozark Mountains to the north.
Perched above the Petit Jean River Valley and Blue Mountain Lake, 13 cabins on Mount Magazine offer breathtaking views in a rustic setting. The lodge also offers 60 guest rooms with breathtaking views of the valley below.
We took in the increasable sunset overlooking the miles of mountains before enjoying a relaxing dinner at The Skycrest Restaurant.
The fall is the most popular time to visit or stay on the mountain because of the cool weather and extraordinary fall colors.
