It’s hard to believe that one can find forested wilderness in the heart of Tokyo, Japan.
Located just steps from the Harajuku subway station, an entry path into a forest leads visitors to the Meiji Shrine and adjacent Youogi Park. Both make up a large forested area in the heart of Tokyo.
As one steps into the forest via the walking paths, the noise of the densely populated city s disappear as one enters into a calm and quiet oasis.
The Meiji Shrine – completed in 1920 — is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Meiji was the first emperor of modern Japan. He died in 1912. The shrine was rebuilt after WW II.
Visitors to the shrine can make offerings at the main hall, buying charms and amulets or writing out one’s wish on an ema.
